r. Frank Wier, who caught this remarkable scene on film, says that “he’s old enough to be in no hurry to call something a first”- but he had to admit this was unusual.
The photos came about as the result of being in the right place at the right time. “I had the wrong camera for the purpose,” explains Wier,” and I was fighting to keep the batteries alive.”
The bear was in the yard, just looking around, now and then “testing his reach”, up one tree in particular.
Confucius, the adult housecat, was watching from a porch banister, but curiosity soon got the best of him and he crept under the porch gate and showed himself to the bear.
After a couple of stalking steps by the cat, the bear snorted, and pawed at the ground.
The cat, who by all evidence fancies himself a black panther - “Hollered Lights, camera, action,” laughs Wier.
With that the bear bolted up a tree followed after a few yards by Confucius. The standoff ended peacefully however, with Confucius “allowing” the confused and humbled bear to come down and ramble off into the woods.
