Community comes out for Townsend Christmas Parade

Though snow had threatened, the skies stayed clear and the
crowds came out when Townsend hosted its annual Christmas
parade, December 6th 2009.
This year’s parade was centered on the theme; “A Patriotic
Christmas - Celebrating Our Gift of Freedom.” Parade Marshals
were veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm
and Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom.
The events theme was really driven home by the  parading
vehicles of the newly founded Knoxville military vehicle club,
especially the vets riding in them, including 89 year old Joe
Humphreys, Parade Marshal representing WWII vets.
Representing the Korean War veterans is Max Hodge, the
Vietnam War veteran is Bill Blair, the Desert Storm veteran is
Ervil Headrick and Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation
Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan is Cody Russell.
Students from local Heritage High School’s ROTC color guard
provided an honorary military escort
Several area business’s and churches  were represented as
well as the crowd favorite, horses from area stables, who came
“decked out” shiny and ready to impress. This year’s parade
route was about a half mile longer than last years. This
occurred due to the parade rout being “reversed”, starting at
the Townsend Welcome center and ending at Nawger Nob arts
and Crafts center.
