On February 9, students from pigeon forge High Schools, DECA club traveled to Walters State University in Morristown, Tn. To compete in the DECA district 6 conferences.
The Distributive Education Club of America or DECA was formed as an international association of students and teachers of marketing, management and entrepreneurship in business, finance, hospitality, and marketing sales and service.
The group’s faculty advisor is Mrs. Jill Maples, who teaches marketing at the High School.
Each student who participated had an area to cover and be proficient in. Some examples would be tourism marketing, or foodservice advertising- Mr. Fryes was “Principals of Marketing”. Part of the event was a test over the principles of marketing, which was comprised of 100 questions, which Mr. Frye was given 100 minutes to answer.
(This portion of the competition was administrated at Pigeon Forge High School.)
Jesse and the other students traveled to Morristown to compete in a series of “interviews” designed to simulate various business situations.
“I was very nervous”, laughs Jesse “the lady giving the test asked if I was o.k.”  Jesse went on to explain that, “the questions were about how I would handle this, or that situation, all of which might come up day to day in an office environment.”  Mr. Frye works part-time at his family’s custom cabinet business, Frye’s Custom Cabinets and furniture. Did his experience working there help with the competition? “Definitely” replies Frye, whose work duties involve dealing with customers. When asked why he joined the club, Mr. Frye said it was to enhance his collage resumes.
The Pigeon Forge team has been invited to attend the State Competition, which will be held in Nashville next month.
